Good Result at Leicester Contest for St Albans Band PDF Print E-mail
Playing Edward Gregson's 'The Plantagenets' the band were confident of a good result until the night before when Eb Bass player Paul Clarke was taken ill once a number of the band were already in Loughborough. Being far from home, late at night and with only limited information there was little that could be done to find another player. Also, being an 'own choice' contest the borrowing of a player on the day of the contest would be limited to players who had played the piece recently. Ultimately it was decided that bringing another player in could cause more harm than good and so it was decided to just go with the remaining bass section with Garry Ambrose on Eb Bass and Nick Doolan on Bb Bass. Thankfully it was a risk that paid off - in his summing up Adjudicator John Roberts said that many bands were significantly overblowing - with our reduced number of players this would have created a quieter sound and would have avoided any chance of the sound becoming too loud.

Although not an ideal situation the band were very pleased with their result at Loughborough and hope to build on the result at next year's Areas.
