A small reunion of a few select St Albans 'Old Boys' was held on Monday 20th June and it is hoped that this will lead to a full scale reunion next year.
Five former members of St Albans City Band were brought together to share old memories after Nick Doolan, one of the City Band's current Eb Bass players started researching the history of the band. Present on the 20th June were George Wright ( Horn / Bass Trombone 1934 - 1970 ), Len Smith ( Cornet / Bb Bass 1939 - present), David MacDonald (Baritone / Trombone 1947 - 2004), Richard Banks ( Horn / Cornet 1962 - 2003) and Ken Smith (Cornet / Baritone 1965 - present). Most remarkable was Ken Smith, who is the third generation to have played in the band, his Grandfather, Joe Smith having joined the band right back in 1909 and played an active part until the mid-1960's. Many old stories were swapped and a number of old pictures of the band had individuals identified on them.
It is hoped that from this small reunion a larger event can be arranged in the Spring of 2006. Therefore we are keen to contact as many people as possible who played or had significant contact with the band over the years. 2006 will mark 114 years since the founding of the band, and it seems a good a time as any to hold a reunion, and hopefully it can become a regular occurrence.
Anyone wishing to get in contact can do so through the 'Contact Us' part of this website. We look forward to meeting you! |
